Analysis & Reflection

1. When first encountering Wiki at the beginning of the course, I got the impression that Wiki is a chaotic environment. I was very intimidated by the freedom of the class, and the amount i seemed to need to learn. The users (in this case other students) capability to change and edit the pages seems to me to be irresponsible. Because anyone can change anything at anytime, people might take away my work and replace it with their own.

Throughout the 333 September 2006 section, I hope to learn how to effectively use the wiki. Although this may be a long process I am confident that I will eventually figure it out. Everything as far as page programming seems different, and at this point I can say that I cannot use this space. I should definately spend some more time to learn the different tricks on the wikispace. Also my first experience with the space is proving to be extremely difficult as I am having difficulty with it. Part of the issue could be the mouse on this Macintosh computer as the page seem to be skipping back and I do not know why.

I have never before used a site anything like the Wikispace. I am unfamiliar with this type of environment but will work with it to create understanding for myself, and hopefully others.

2. When i am on the Wiki pages, I have a great deal of difficulty figuring out what to change and edit when it comes to community building. It seems that everyone else beats me to the chase with any of the ideas i come up with. Not to mention that there will always be a "better" version of the idea. The way I have chosen the changes that I have made are simple, improvement. I browse the wikispace until i find something that seems wrong, or something that could perform better. This helps me assess the need of change.

I am a little uncomfortable editing other people's work. Maybe I feel this discomfort because of the way I would feel if someone had changed my work. The feeling that your work may not be considered good enough by another is naturally not a good one. For this reason I perfer to add to the space as opposed to edits the writing of others. Adding to a topic written about is one thing, but changing someone's work is something I do not want to do in this class environment.
I generally check my edits for alterations. Some of my work has been changed, for example one of the banners i posted has been changed. Normally this does not bother me. The only edit that i think might offend me is if someone was to edit say, my analysis and reflection page.

3. My views about the wiki have changed dramatically since September. It turns out that using the wiki is not difficult at all!!! The good people from wiki also have a help page found at: http://www.wikispaces.com/site/tour. Making anchors, pages, and edits is very simple. I have also changed my view on the ability for the entire class having the ability to make changes. I have found that using wiki as a space for learning is good. Being able to post questions and make imporvements to help eachother work seems to create a successful interactive working environment for the whole class. My negative thoughts about people deleting others' work did not seem to be an issue.

The only suggestions i have to possibly improve the wiki experience are with technical aspects within the wiki space. An instant messaging service that would allow students to communicate with eachother while of the space would be good. That way any issues with the space could be addressed without having the issue of editing the same pages at the same time as others.

The most productive aspect of using the wiki for the course is the constant communication that the entire class has with each other. Being able to work together to create this environment, especially with other students we may not have met personally, has been a great resource. If I could recommend this space in other classes I think that it would be beneficary to my other classes. Another good thing about wiki is that you do not experience the same issues found with some of the other softwares used by professors for classes, for example WebCT Vista.
